Why are commercial trucks more dangerous than other vehicles?

Sharing the road with commercial trucks can feel daunting. Even the most seasoned drivers understand the concern when they see massive trucks cruising with them along the highway. Compared to passenger vehicles, these trucks present a unique set of dangers due to their size and weight.

Factors contributing to truck danger

For safety reasons, you should be at least one car from the vehicle in front of you. But when trucks are on the road, you should be extra careful as they may pose a more considerable danger.

  • Size and weight: A fully loaded commercial truck can weigh up to 80,000 pounds, compared to a car’s 4,000 pounds. This immense weight disparity translates to a greater force upon impact, crushing smaller vehicles in a crash.
  • Blind spots: Large trucks have extensive blind spots, particularly on the sides and rear. Passenger cars can quickly disappear into these zones, making them invisible to the driver.
  • Braking ability: Due to its weight, trucks require a significantly longer stopping distance than cars. Drivers who underestimate the time it takes for a truck to come to a complete stop can cause rear-end collisions.
  • Driver fatigue: Truck drivers often operate under tight deadlines and long hours, increasing the risk of fatigue-induced accidents.

Whether you are cruising in an alley or on a highway, every driver should practice defensive driving as anything can happen. Remember, it is better to be safe than sorry.

Steps to take after a truck accident

Getting in a truck accident can be terrifying and overwhelming. Before anything else, seek medical attention even if you do not feel immediate pain. Document what you can and take photos of the damage, debris, and truck’s license plate. Typically, law enforcement shows up on the scene, and it is crucial that you report what happened so that you can file a formal police report. If you have insurance, you may also contact your insurance provider or the appropriate professionals to help you fully understand the next steps to take.
