What should you do if someone is tailgating you?

In theory, drivers are supposed to leave at least three seconds between vehicles. This is to prevent tailgating, which can, in turn, prevent rear-end accidents.

However, as you likely know, drivers break this rule all the time. Some of them tailgate because they’re trying to tell you that they want to pass. Others do it because they just don’t know how long the following distance should be, and they think it’s safe. But no matter what happens, what should you do about it?

Never escalate the situation

It can be frustrating when someone is tailgating you, and you may be tempted to escalate the situation by sharply hitting your brakes. This is often known as brake-checking. But it is very dangerous and illegal, and you should never do it. It only leads to road rage and car accidents.

Allow the driver to pass

In most cases, your best option is simply to slow down and allow that driver to pass you. Try to find a safe place where you can do it, and slow down gradually so that they are not taken by surprise. Once they pass, then you can drive safely.

Naturally, there are many people who resent letting a tailgater pass. They feel as if the tailgater is the one who is breaking the law and putting them in danger, so why should they get what they wanted all along? But you have to remember that your goal is to avoid an accident, and this is the best way to do it.

If you do still get injured by another driver‘s negligent actions, then you need to know how to seek financial compensation.
