Matthew A. Cathey
Matt is an experienced trial lawyer specializing in all types of catastrophic injury cases, including medical malpractice, trucking and defective products. His practice takes him all across the state of Georgia. In addition to his statewide practice in Georgia, he has also successfully recovered millions of dollars for cases in both South Carolina and Tennessee. One of the things that is most gratifying to him professionally is the trust other lawyers place in him when they seek him as a co-counsel to handle complex cases. In addition, Matt is frequently asked to speak at legal education seminars where he teaches other lawyers about trials and complex legal issues. His numerous speaking engagements are one of the reasons he was appointed by the State Bar of Georgia to serve on its Advisory Board Committee for Continuing Education. He is also the co-chairperson of the national seminar “Update on Georgia Law,” which is hosted yearly in Colorado.
As the son of a trial lawyer, Matt has seen firsthand the difference that a hardworking and ethical trial lawyer makes for a client and their family. In every case he handles, Matt tries to make sure each client feels like they are the most important client he has. Several of his clients have remained friends long after their cases are over. Matt prepares every case as if it will go to trial, as he has found that is the only way to ever recover the true value of a client’s case. His trial practice speaks for itself, including a record-setting $10 million medical malpractice verdict in Franklin County, Georgia. However, some of the professional accomplishments that are the most meaningful to Matt involve cases that, because of his preparation, never had to go to trial in the first place. Getting the full value for a case that can stay under the radar is extremely gratifying to him and the entire firm, and most importantly, is the very best outcome for the clients.
He and his wife, Jessie, live in Habersham County, Georgia, with their two young daughters, Parker and Madelyn. When away from the office, you will find him and his family enjoying flyfishing on a trout stream in Northeast Georgia and cheering for the Georgia Bulldogs in the fall during football season.
